Walking & Hiking

Allerthorpe Golf & Park Retreat is the perfect base for exploring City, Coast & Country alike. We've picked out our favorite destinations within a 90 minute drive time for a day out walking and exploring. But it doesn't stop there, with the North York Moors National Park less than an hour a way there's plenty of places to discover.

Hutton-le-Hole

A picturesque village located in the North York Moors, Hutton-le-Hole is a charming location for a day out.

Here you can start a 4-mile circular walk to nearby Lastingham, expect sweeping views throughout!

Lasting about 2 and a half hours, this walk is moderate featuring woodland and moorland alike - offering the best of both world's for walkers.

Why not visit Lastingham's biggest attraction? St Mary's church attracts visitors from all over Yorkshire due to it's atmospheric 11th century crypt!

The White Horse

Located on the Hambleton Hills, The White Horse attracts spectators from miles away. Dating back to 1857, the White Horse is a tremendous 314ft long, you really can't miss it.

Park at the car park at the bottom of the White Horse to start your ascent to the top of the Hambleton Hills. Measuring a distance of 1.75 miles with an estimated completion time of 1 hour 30 minutes, you have plenty of time to enjoy the view whilst tucking in to a well deserved picnic.

Howardian Hills

Castle Howard can be described as one of Britain's finest Stately homes, and is a regular favourite for North Yorkshire locals. With beautifully sculptured gardens and water features, lavish state rooms & sumptuous interiors, if you have time to visit the Castle it's self, we definitely recommend!

If walking's more your thing, the surrounding Howardian Hills offer plenty of opportunity for a wander. With a dense network of footpaths, a plethora of quaint villages and miles of countryside - there's something for everyone.

Our favourite walk is not for the faint-hearted! The walk circles the Castle Howard estate, visiting attractions such as The Great Lake, Temple of Four Winds and Mausoleum. The difficulty is described as easy/moderate and measures a distance of 5 miles.

Fountains Abbey

As one of the best preserved ruined monasteries in England, Fountain's Abbey is an awe-inspiring local must-see. This World Heritage Site is almost 850 hectares, therefore there's plenty to explore!

Choose from the Abbey it's self, Studley Royal water garden, the Deer Park or just venture down the miles of footpaths and trails!

Choose the 'ancient trees walk' or 'the seven bridges valley walk' for an easy stroll, but we like the 'boots, gaiters and vistas walk' measuring 5 miles and takes you around the boundary of the estate.

Goathland

Best-known as the fictional village of popular television series, Heartbeat, Goathland is rich in culture with a history extending from Viking times.

The village lies 500 metres above sea level and boasts pristine stone buildings, a pretty setting for any walk.

Starting at Mallyan Spout, a must see waterfall, there's a spectacular circular route passing through Goathland. Make sure to catch  bite at The Mallyan Spout Hotel on the way back, we promise it's tasty!
